    SCHOOL  NEWS

    Native Habitat Landscape Update

The wait is almost over! Trees, plants, irrigation, mulch, and now benches are all installed at the front of school. Once the final layer of GraniteCrete paving is spread at the end of the month, the pathway will open and you'll be able to experience up close the landscape come alive. We're already noticing hummingbirds, butterflies, lizards, dragonflies and birds checking out the new native plants and rocks, which is very exciting! All of us at Refugia Marin would like to thank the entire school community for being patient with the construction; we hope you've been able to enjoy watching the process unfold. Stay tuned for informational signage about the importance of creating habitat and biodiversity, earth-friendly gardening practices, and the myriad benefits of native plants and keystone species. In the meantime, mark your calendars for these upcoming events to introduce students to their school's new native habitat landscape:

Wednesday, 11/5/25 from 2:00-2:45: Habitat Landscape Tour and Scavenger Hunt

    Time: Tuesday 3:15PM-5:45PM 10/28-12/9 No class 11/11

Explore ancient ruins, discover strange magic, and incredible creatures. Get the dice out for this pencil and paper, collaborative game of adventure and imagination. Participants take the initiative to direct the story telling through the choices they make role playing their characters. Each game we create a unique story arc that follows our heroes as they become powerful forces of their realm.

This program is for all experience levels and is an excellent introduction to table top role playing games like Dungeons & Dragons.

What to Bring:  Bring a water bottle, and a snack if needed. We may take a break for participants to socialize, play outside, and have an opportunity to eat their snack.

AGE RANGE DISCLAIMER: This is a mixed age activity. Your child might be the only one their age in this group. This program's facilitators believe age diversity leads to healthy friendships and mentorships across the age range and reduces negative effects of social comparison and competition.  If you have concerns or questions about the age distribution of a particular group, please contact  nat.davis@carpentryforkids.net

CA Safe Haven Schools Act & SAFE Act

    Dear LCMSD Parents and Families,

I am writing to share important information about two new California laws, Assembly Bill 49 (AB 49) and Senate Bill 98 (SB 98), recently signed by Governor Gavin Newsom. These laws directly impact our school communities and reinforce our commitment to keeping all students safe and secure.

Our schools have been, and will continue to be, safe havens for every child. These new laws strengthen that promise by providing specific protections for our students and families.

What These New Laws Mean for You and Your Child

    • Schools are Protected Spaces: Under AB 49, a law known as the California Safe Haven Schools Act, school employees are prohibited from allowing immigration enforcement officers to enter a non-public area of our campuses without a valid judicial warrant or court order. This law ensures that unauthorized immigration enforcement activities cannot disrupt your child's education or cause fear within our schools.

    • Families Will Be Notified: SB 98, or the Sending Alerts to Families in Education (SAFE) Act, requires our district to immediately notify all students, parents, and staff if we confirm that immigration enforcement agents are present on a school campus. This ensures you have timely and accurate information to make the best decisions for your family.

Our schools are committed to providing a welcoming, inclusive, and safe environment for all students to learn and thrive. We want to be very clear that every child has a right to a free public education in California, regardless of their or their family’s immigration status.

We will not share your child's personal information with immigration officials without a proper judicial warrant or court order.

For additional information about your child’s right to a public education and other resources, please visit the Marin County Office of Education website

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us.

    Sincerely,

    Dr. Brett Geithman

It's SPARKtober and we love our new art class and our new displays in our library!!

    PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

Time is on the move as we just about halfway through the First Trimester! Please review Aeries with your child to help encourage reflection on their practices as a learner. If you need support or have questions do not hesitate to reach out to your child’s teachers, school counselor, or administration. We appreciate your partnership in growing our Cougars into their fullest potential!

We had a full week of sports this week and we are so proud of our Cougars! Our runners hit the trails and our flag football and volleyball teams showed up and showed out! This week we have our flag football team at Del Mar and our runners at Miller Creek, come out and cheer our student athletes on! Go Cougars!!

This week in Advisory, October 14, our entire school will participate in The Great Shakeout disaster drill along with several other schools and districts in the US and internationally. The Great Shakeout site has great material for your own family to prepare in the case of a major disaster or emergency

As a school, we regularly practice fire, earthquake and lockdown drills so that students know what to expect and what to do in the event of a real emergency. In case of a disaster, our staff will divide into several teams: Search and Rescue, Security, First Aid, Student Supervision, Psychological Aid, Student Release, and Shelter/Food/Sanitation. Staff had a chance to practice the protocols for these roles during our recent drill.

A huge thank you to Central Marin Police and our Fire Department for the help, feedback and time they continue to give us in helping us prepare for the drills and potential emergency situations.

    What You Should Know

    • Parent Notification: If there is an emergency that requires the students to be evacuated, parents, guardians and other people provided to the school as your emergency contacts will be called by the automated phone system and informed of the situation. We will also attempt to text and email depending on what systems are working.

    • No parking at school: The school’s parking lots will be closed off – so walk to school or park away from the school campus.

    • Student Release: Before taking a child from school, you need to sign them out.  A photo ID is required at student release so we have a record of who has collected them. Only parents, guardians or other people provided to the school as your emergency contacts can collect your child. Parents will line up on the blacktop at the Student Release tables to sign out and receive your children and then must check out.  If you are picking up another child, you must be on his/her list.

    • Medication: Any medication you have provided to the school will be brought out from the classrooms and the nurse’s office. It is recommended that the school has medication for 72 hours for use following an emergency.

Thank you for your help in preparing to keep our students safe in case of an emergency.

Last, we want to invite all Cougar artists to show us their ideas for the 2025-26 yearbook cover!! The information is below in School News and is a fantastic way to leave your mark at Hall. Please take the time to pre-order your yearbook to hold onto memories as a Cougar!

    Have a beautiful Sunday,

Strong Student Growth Reflected in 2025 CAASPP Results

    Quick Facts:
    • Growth in All Areas: English Language Arts (+2%), Math (+5%), and Science (+3%)

    • More than 50% of students exceed math standards at all schools (and over 76% met or exceed standards)

    • CAASPP student score reports for current 4th-8th graders can be accessed via Aeries

    • District and school CAASPP data can be accessed here

    • Detailed CAASPP Board Report

    Dear LCMSD Community,

Today, the 2025 California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP) results were publicly released by the California Department of Education. They are available here. We’re excited to share that LCMSD students continue to excel as LCMSD CAASPP results show gains across all subjects:

    • English Language Arts (ELA): +2%

    • Mathematics: +5%

    • Science: +3%

These results reflect the dedication of our students, teachers, staff, and families. It is important to note that more than half of our students exceed standards in math at every school, with 76%+ meeting or exceeding standards.

Each spring, LCMSD students in grades 3-8 participate in the CAASPP assessments, which measure critical thinking, problem-solving, and writing aligned to California’s academic standards. These assessments provide one valuable snapshot of student learning - alongside daily classroom work, projects, and teacher feedback - to help us ensure every student is growing and thriving.

We are proud that this growth is being seen districtwide. The increases in all three subjects show that our long-term focus on literacy, Cognitively Guided Instruction in math, and data-driven interventions is making a difference. These efforts, combined with high-quality teaching, dedicated support staff, and strong family partnerships, are helping students reach new levels of success.

While we celebrate this continued progress, we also remain focused on helping every child meet or exceed state standards. Continuous improvement is part of our culture, and we will use these data to guide next steps in curriculum, instruction, and targeted support.

For families, individual CAASPP score reports for current 4th–8th graders are now available in Aeries. To access your child’s report, log in to Aeries Parent Portal and select Test Scores from the menu.

We invite you to review the detailed CAASPP Report shared at the September 17 Board Meeting for a deeper look at our district and school results.

Congratulations to our students, teachers, staff, and families - your hard work is paying off!

    LCMSD Update 10.6.25

    Too Long, Didn’t Read (TLDR)

    • Where’s My Teacher? Understanding Professional Development in LCMSD

    • Becoming a Trustee Workshop – October 8 at 5:00 via Zoom; recording available October 9

    • Superintendent Coffee Chat – October 17, 8:30–9:30 a.m. at Neil Cummins (open forum)

    • E-Bike Safety Reminder from CMPA

    • “Let’s Talk” Parent Education – First Elementary Session

    Dear LCMSD Community,

It’s been a full and engaging start to October! I want to thank the many families who participated in SPARK in the Park yesterday. Events like this help strengthen the connections that make LCMSD such a special place to learn and grow.

Also, today kicked off Parent-Teacher Conference Week, an important opportunity to connect with your child’s teacher, celebrate growth, and discuss goals for the months ahead. We deeply appreciate the time and collaboration that go into these conversations - they are an essential part of our shared commitment to student success.

Below are a few additional updates and opportunities to connect this month.

    Thank you,

    Dr. Brett Geithman
    Superintendent

Where’s My Teacher? Understanding Professional Development in LCMSD
From time to time, you may hear that your child’s teacher is out for the day to participate in professional learning. These days are not just time away from the classroom - they are an essential part of how we continually grow as educators and strengthen teaching and learning across the district.

At LCMSD, we believe that ongoing professional growth is central to providing the best educational experience for our students. Our professional development framework is multi-layered and intentionally designed to build shared understanding, deepen expertise, and personalize growth.

We are fortunate to have three instructional coaches who guide much of this work:

    • Lisa Capobianco – Literacy Coach

    • Beth Hawkins – CGI Math Coach

    • Nathan Beach – Depth and Complexity Coach (20%)

Our professional learning model includes several interconnected layers:

    • Foundational PD – Full-day sessions designed to establish a shared, districtwide understanding of key initiatives and best practices.

    • School-Level PD – Site-specific professional learning tied to each school’s goals, often integrated into staff meetings and site-based planning.

    • Department (Hall) and Grade-Level (Elementary) Lab Days – Teachers collaborate in teams to analyze data, plan Tier 1 instruction, and engage in classroom-based learning experiences where strategies are modeled and practiced. These sessions are led by our instructional coaches, and substitutes are utilized to cover classrooms.

    • EL Education Lab Days  – This year, teachers and administrators will also engage with EL Education staff developers through several Lab Days focused on modeling lessons and deepening understanding of our newly adopted literacy curriculum.

    • Individual Coaching – At the most personalized level, teachers work one-on-one with instructional coaches who provide them support tailored to their classroom needs.

Our professional learning focus areas for 2025–26 include:

    • Implementing EL Education in literacy across all schools

    • Implementing Depth and Complexity at Hall Middle School

    • Continuing support for Cognitively Guided Instruction (CGI) in mathematics

Through this intentional and layered approach, LCMSD educators continue to learn, reflect, and refine their practice, ensuring that every student benefits from high-quality, research-based instruction every day. Thank you in advance for your support and understanding when your child’s teacher is engaging in this important work.

Becoming a Trustee Workshop: Wednesday, October 8 at 5:00 via Zoom (LINK)
With a current vacancy on the LCMSD Board of Trustees, this workshop is a great opportunity for community members to learn more about what it means to serve. Current Trustees and I will share information about the role, responsibilities, and appointment process. Whether you are considering applying or simply want to better understand Board governance, we encourage you to attend. A recording will be posted (HEREon October 9 for anyone unable to join live.

Superintendent Coffee Chat: October 17, 8:30–9:30 a.m. at Neil Cummins
Coffee chats are a great venue for parents to learn more and partner with our schools. This month’s chat will be open-ended - any and all questions are encouraged. As always, parents from all schools are welcome to attend.

GREAT SHAKEOUT EARTHQUAKE DRILL will be held during advisory on Tuesday October 14. Staff have participated in refresher training for our procedures during and after an earthquake, and students will participate in a drill where they practice stop, drop, and hold then evacuate. Now is a great time to review with your family your emergency plan and to ensure that your child’s emergency contacts are up-to-date. In the event of an emergency, students will only be released to those on their emergency contacts, and the office will not take additional phone calls or emails giving permission for students to be released to other adults. Emergency contacts can be updated on Aeries. Please contact the office if you need support. For additional information, review the 2025-26 LCMSD Safety Newsletter.

RETAKE PICTURE DAY is Oct 22nd Any student that was absent on the original picture day and students wanting a retake photo, mark your calendar!

PROGRESS REPORTS for students at risk of earning low grades will be mailed the week of October 13. Any student with an overall grade of D or F in any one class will receive a progress report in the mail containing all of their grades.

LOCK REPLACEMENT  Around this time of year, we see more locks getting lost. Please be aware that if a student's lock is lost or needs to be replaced, there will now be a $10.00 charge per lock. Students should go to the Attendance office to speak with Ms. Elizabeth if their lock needs attention.

ATTENDANCE  if your child will be absent: email hallabsentee@lcmschools.org or call (415) 927-6956 by 8:30 am AND provide the reason for the absence. Absences are marked as unexcused when they are not reported or when a reason isn’t shared.

School attendance is essential! Ensure that on-time arrival and staying for the entire school day are an utmost priority. Routines and consistency go a long way. We understand that illness, medical appointments, and other circumstances arise. Please do your best to minimize being absent from school and reach out to school staff if you experience challenges. We are here to support!

*** Want a seamless pick-up? Consult the Hall Bell Schedule and make an effort to pick-up during a passing period. If you must pick up at the lunch hour, it’s highly recommended you do so before lunch begins as it can take extra time to locate students in the recess yard.

BUS TO SCHOOL Marin Transit has made some changes to the Route 29 schedule to better accommodate Hall students. Correction from previous messaging: temporary passes are valid until October 31. Permanent bus passes are available for purchase at this link for more information on purchasing, schedules, or for financial support for eligible families, visit this website.

CHROMEBOOK  Please remind your student to charge their Chromebook every night. If your child needs to borrow a Chromebook, they can get one from the office.  The office has a limited supply of loaners and every third loaner results in a detention.

Only students, staff, and approved visitors may be on campus from 7:45am until 3:30pm.  For more information on how to become a volunteer, refer to our Hall volunteer procedures.

FORGET SOMETHING AT HOME? We understand things get left behind. If your child forgets their lunch, PE uniform, or something for an after-school activity, please drop it off on the white cart outside the office in a clearly labeled bag. Remind your child to check the cart and their school email for messages. For valuable items like electronics or band equipment, please bring them directly to the office. Large sports equipment should be put in the sports equipment cage next to the lost and found.

Also, no DoorDash, Grubhub, or any food deliveries are allowed on campus.  Thank you for your cooperation
